One road, one squad with a jeep, and nobody else to send.
The city has stopped sweeping its streets. Ford's squad rides in on the back of a truck whose driver will not stop for anybody, and at the battalion yard a captain puts a finger on the map. There is an enlisted billet where Sergeant Prosser has held the gate since this started, with wounded he cannot move, and one road between it and the wire.
Their job is to open that road, mark it and keep it open long enough to bring the casualties down. Nobody knows what is on the middle stretch. Ford, Cole, Baines and the Vietnamese police sergeant Lan find out, one doorway at a time, with a barricade going up across the street in the dark and a bus waiting for the gap.
